Frequently Asked Questions
Business Insurance
What is Business Owner Insurance?
Business Owner Insurance includes:
- Key Person Insurance: Protects your business if a key person becomes unable to work
- Loss of Revenue Cover: Helps cover ongoing expenses if the business can't operate
- Buy-and-Sell Agreements: Ensures business continuity between partners/directors if one becomes disabled or passes away
It's essential protection for the business itself, separate from personal insurance.
Claims & Coverage
Can I get insurance if I have pre-existing medical conditions?
Yes, you can still get insurance with pre-existing conditions, though there may be exclusions or loadings (additional premiums) for those specific conditions. Each insurer handles this differently, and we work with multiple providers to find the best solution for your situation.
Group Schemes with Automatic Acceptance Levels are particularly valuable for people with pre-existing conditions, as they don't exclude these conditions.
How do I make a claim?
We're here to help you through the claims process. Having been through it ourselves with David's health crisis, we understand how overwhelming it can be. We'll:
- Guide you through the required documentation
- Liaise with the insurance company on your behalf
- Advocate for you to ensure your claim is processed fairly
- Keep you informed every step of the way
Our experience on both sides of insurance means we know exactly how to navigate the claims process.
General Questions
What makes Wright Way Insurance different from other insurance advisers?
We have a unique perspective - we've lived through what insurance is designed to protect against. When David suffered strokes and heart attacks after the COVID vaccine, we experienced firsthand the financial, emotional, and practical challenges that come with a serious health crisis. This real-world experience, combined with David's 40+ years in the industry, means we understand both sides of insurance: the adviser's expertise and the client's need.
Do I really need insurance if I'm healthy and young?
Absolutely. In fact, this is the best time to get insurance because you're likely to get better rates and fewer exclusions. Most of us will face an illness or health event at some point in our lives. Having insurance in place before something happens means you're protected when you need it most. Plus, you're not just protecting yourself - you're protecting your loved ones from financial stress during difficult times.
How much does insurance cost?
The cost varies based on factors like your age, health, occupation, and the level of cover you choose. Generally, the younger and healthier you are, the more affordable your premiums will be.
We work with you to create a customised plan that provides the protection you need at a price that fits your budget. We can also show you how to structure your cover to get the best value for money.
Group Schemes
What are Group Schemes and how do they work?
Group Schemes are insurance plans for businesses with 10-15+ employees (with at least 75% uptake). The biggest benefit is Automatic Acceptance Levels (AAL), which means:
- No individual applications to complete
- No medical underwriting
- No exclusions for pre-existing conditions
This is an amazing staff benefit that helps with retention and shows employees you care about their wellbeing. It's one of our favourite topics - let's chat about how it could work for your business!
Insurance Types
What's the difference between Life Insurance and Trauma Insurance?
Life Insurance pays out when you pass away - it's designed to help your family cover debts, funeral costs, and ongoing living expenses.
Trauma Insurance (also called Critical Illness or Living Insurance) pays out when you're diagnosed with a serious illness like cancer, heart attack, or stroke - while you're still alive. This lump sum can be used for medical costs, modifications to your home, or to give your partner time off work to care for you.
We recommend having both types of cover for complete protection.
What is Total & Permanent Disability (TPD) Insurance?
TPD Insurance pays a lump sum if you're declared totally and permanently disabled and unable to work in your own or any occupation again. This typically applies when you can't perform 2-3 Activities of Daily Living (bathing, dressing, eating, using a toilet, or moving from place to place).
It's different from Trauma Insurance because it's based on your ability to function and work, not on a specific medical diagnosis.
Do I need Health Insurance if New Zealand has public healthcare?
While we're fortunate to have a public health system, waiting times for elective surgeries have become extremely long, especially since the pandemic. Health Insurance gives you access to:
- Shorter waiting times for surgeries and specialists
- Private hospital care
- Non-Pharmac funded cancer drugs that are Medsafe approved
- Choice of specialists and treatment options
It's about having options and getting treatment when you need it, not when the public system can accommodate you.
What's the difference between Mortgage Cover and Income Protection?
Mortgage Cover specifically insures your mortgage/rent payments - up to 110% of your monthly payments, and it's not offset by ACC.
Income Protection replaces your entire income (typically 75-80%) so you can cover all your living expenses, not just your mortgage.
Many people choose both for comprehensive protection - Mortgage Cover ensures your home is safe, while Income Protection covers everything else.
